7-Study Habits for Highly Effective Education

Developing effective learning practices while you are trying to achieve a bachelor's or master's degree can pose many challenges - especially, if you don't have good study patterns. The demand of balancing a social, family, work and personal life leaves little room for education. However, education can impact a person's life quality. The following tips should tone and tune up your learning habits.

Seize studying control.

Create a to-do list. Break your workload into manageable goal objectives. Next, prioritize and schedule your time, realistically. Never skip classes close to the time of an exam because you may miss a review session.

Manage time, effectively.

Use the hour between classes, lunchtime or the time on public transportation to study and review notes. Interrupt study time with planned break periods. Always begin studying early, with an hour or two per day, and slowly build as the examination date approaches.

Preview course assignments.

Thoroughly, read the class syllabus, reading material, and notes. Make notes of specific topics that are emphasized. Review areas that are not easily understood. Previewing the courses materials will help you focus and organize the primary topics. Remember that previewing should not substitute the required reading of your classes.

Develop a study plan.

Become actively involved with the reading materials. Outline the relevancy of each reading section. Take notes, highlight or underline key concepts. Engage course mates in discussion on the material. Organize group studies if it well help your retain the material. Establish offensive studying habits for information that you don't find compelling.

Integrate learning tools to excel your learning curve.

Obviously, information that is the most meaningful will be remember. While you read, try to elaborate upon new information by developing your own examples. Integrate what you are studying with your knowledge so that you can remember new material better. The following useful techniques will act as learning tools:
  • Chunking - is an effective way to simplify information and make it more meaningful. For instance, create word associations for information that is hard to remember.
  • Mnemonics - is a memory-assisting technique that helps to associate new information with something familiar. In example, to remember a formula or equation, use letters of the alphabet to represent certain numbers.

Test your brain.

Develop questions about primary subject matter from reading assignments. Make a mental note of what the professor stressed in the course. Evaluate the relationships between sections and key points.

Skirt mental fatigue.

When studying, take short breaks. Prior to taking an examination, have a rested mind. Before you go to sleep at night or when you take a break, don't think about academics. Allow yourself to relax and unwind, mentally and physically.
